I WANT TO HATE EVERY PART OF YOU IN MEI can't hate the ones who made me The Astronomy Tower at dusk wasn’t always quiet, but tonight Evan arrived to find the place deserted. He was really quite happy about that. The school seemed particularly rowdy today and he was in one of those moods where he didn’t want to have to deal with people. People being loud and wanting to talk to him and barging into him in the corridors and asking stupid questions in class, all of it had built up to not put him in a very good mood. Not that he was ever in a good mood exactly. He’d long since lost the ability to feel happy and good about himself. He was always looking brooding and sullen, never quite satisfied with anything, even now when things were definitely swinging his way, it was difficult to find happiness. It was an emotion he couldn’t understand anymore.
Alone was the only time he felt anything close to peace. Alone was when he knew he couldn’t possibly be angry or irritated or upset because he couldn’t possibly put himself in a bad mood and he was the only person who was able to calm himself down. Sometimes he would want to find somebody on which to vent his frustrations be that a mudblood victim or a girl but tonight he actually thought that calming himself down alone was the best option. And that was why he escaped the Slytherin common room early after dinner and made his way from the lowest point in the school to the highest. Even the walk alone was enough to help him relax. Exercise was also a good way to focus his mind on something else. Usually he’d do something a little more high impact like swimming in the lake or running through the grounds but tonight a brisk walk to the Astronomy Tower was enough.
He went over and leant against the railings, looking out across the slowly darkening grounds for a while before pulling out a cigarette and lighting it up. It was of course a muggle habit that he had picked up living in that blasted muggle care home but it helped. And Evan was able to modify them ever so slightly just so it didn’t feel like he was endorsing a muggle product. He took in a drag, holding the smoke in his lungs before blowing it out, watching it swirl and fade into the cool night air above him before turning his gaze to the glowing embers in his fingers. He liked watching things burn. Even the slow crackling of a cigarette captivated his attention.
It gave him something to focus on. He let all of his memories wash away and let the fresh evening air and the bitter smell and taste of smoke take over. In an odd way, he felt cleansed, or maybe that was just the peaceful feeling he tended to feel up here. He blew out another lungful of smoke wondering how long that peace might last. This was Hogwarts, so he didn’t count on being alone for very long. However he could easily get rid of the intruder if he wished to. It was unlikely a professor would be up here when curfew was still a couple of hours away and students could easily be frightened off. He was not willing to have company tonight.

Cheering charms, summoning charms, banishing charms, silencing charms. Rita’s detention had barely lasted an hour but her head was already spinning. Not only did she resent missing the majority of dinner, but she resented these detentions that had become a frequent part of her schedule. But rules were rules, and any student that turned in two failing essays in a row had to do them again under the supervision of a Professor. Of course, she’d handed the two essays into Professor Flitwick at the end of the detention knowing full well they’d be returned with the same grade as before. But asking for help was out of the question. As far as Rita was concerned, the only person that was going to be aware she was struggling with her NEWTs was herself. Currently located in the Great Hall, Rita occupied herself by staring around the hall with a bored expression on her face. Her food lay untouched on her plate. Conversations were going on around her, but she choose to take no part in them, uninterested in what her housemates had to say.
Ending her pitiful attempt at eating dinner, she rose from her seat and headed for the Entrance Hall. No one inquired as to where she was going, or offered to come with her. In fact, they barely glanced in her direction. But it was to be expected in Slytherin, people looked out for themselves first and foremost. Especially with these new laws in place in the school. Rita glanced down at the grey band on her robes. She hated it, hated the fact that it was so visible on her clothing, marking the fact that she was half blood. But being in Slytherin had its advantages. The green on her robes made the grey band less significant in the eyes of the Purebloods.
Her feet carried her up the stairs without her really noticing where she was going. She passed groups of students chatting with each other. Some carried on with their conversation as she walked past, completely oblivious. Some fell silent as she passed. They were the wise ones. She slowly climbed the staircase that led to the top of the Astronomy Tower. She was expecting it to be deserted seeing as the majority of the Hogwarts population were still at dinner. It was not. “Rosier,” she stated out loud looking at the sixth year leaning against the railings. “Up here all alone … how unusual.” She walked across to join him at the railings, her heels echoing on the stone floor as she did so. Evan Rosier was one of those people that isolated themselves more often than was normal. But that just made him so much more interesting to Rita. People like that often had something to hide, and if there was one thing Rita loved more than anything, it was discovering exactly what that was. She turned her attention to the grounds while she waited for his reply. Or a hex sent in her direction. You could just never tell with Slytherins.

I WANT TO HATE EVERY PART OF YOU IN MEI can't hate the ones who made me It seemed however that company was what he was going to get. He didn’t have much time alone, but he spent that time staring out across the grounds, as the world got slowly darker around him. Seeing out across the grounds, seeing further than Hogwarts and trying to see past Hogsmeade. Not for the first time did he feel cooped up in this school. He didn’t dislike the place per say, and this year especially he felt like he could incredibly enjoy it and next year as well because the Dark Lord was sure to be in power for many, many years to come. There was even talk that he was indestructible. But he loved the idea of freedom. Of no rules, of no curfews or homework deadlines or times to be at classes, not that he obeyed those rules all of the time anyway, but even the mere fact that they were their annoyed him. Once he graduated Hogwarts and could use magic outside of school, he would be free to go wherever he pleased and do whatever he wanted. That was what appealed to him the most.
What he didn’t like were the sound of footsteps heading his way. He sighed, leaning his head forward to rest upon the metal barricade, the cold metal sending a sharp pulse of shock through his system. He left it there even as he heard the door behind him open and close, not bothering to look up and see who had interrupted his growing serenity until they spoke. He slowly raised his head and turned to look at Rita Skeeter striding towards him. His expression didn’t change from the neutral, maybe slightly bored look he was wearing as she came to stand next to him. She wasn’t the worst company in the world he supposed, even if she was determined to interrogate him at every opportunity he could easily fob her off if he wanted to. But, and possibly most importantly, she was nice to look at. Maybe he would let her stay. It depended on her intentions.
He raised a single eyebrow at her words, rolling his eyes a bit. He couldn’t quite tell if she was being sarcastic but he hoped for her sake that she was. He was always alone. Solitude was his thing and if Rita Skeeter, nosy, budding journalist and gossip extraordinaire couldn’t see that then she wasn’t very good at her hobby. He flexed his fingers, lifting them off of the railing as if he was going to go for his wand but he lowered them again soon enough. He continued to stay quiet for a long time before deciding on a response. Technically he didn’t have to say anything. She hadn’t asked him a question, merely stated the obvious. But he was sure Rita wasn’t the sort of person who liked silences so he filled it. ”I’m sorry that I’m not very interesting, Skeeter.” He stated, not sounding apologetic at all. I’m just a simple creature of habit. Alone is how I like to be.” He sounded as if he was vaguely amused by his own words.
”So I assume now that you have realised that there is no source of gossip to be found up here that you’ll be leaving shortly?” He spoke relatively politely even if in all honesty he probably would prefer her to go. She had tried before to get a story out of him, she seemed to realise he had something interesting to give, but that hadn’t worked out to well for her. One of these days she was going to get herself even more hurt by him.

Rita felt her body tense when Evan flexed his fingers. Of course, it would be her natural reaction to somebody like Evan Rosier reaching for his wand. But the second she realised he wasn’t doing so made her feel extremely foolish. She adjusted her position slightly to cover her sudden movement, leaning into the railings. She was so annoyed at herself for her paranoia that she barely noticed that Evan hadn’t yet responded to her. Silence made her uncomfortable; she would sooner fill the air with meaningless chatter than be exposed to the deafening sound of silence. Of course, conversations between Slytherins were very often like this, each individual taking time to consider their words before vocalising them. She could barely tolerate such behaviour on a normal level, and Evan seemed to take things to the extreme. But it wasn’t a trait she found entirely unattractive.
Relief flooded through her body when he eventually replied. For a few moments she had been certain that it was his intention to completely ignore her. Attention was what Rita craved, being ignored didn’t bode well with her. “On the contrary, I find you very interesting Rosier,” she stated plainly. It was a simple statement. And more importantly, it was true. Evan Rosier isolated himself from the rest of the Hogwarts population far more often than was considered normal. Normal for a Slytherin in any case. To Rita, it suggested he had something to hide. And if there was one thing that she loved, it was someone with a secret. But her previous comment left her feeling rather exposed, almost as if she had been too honest. She ran a hand through her long blonde hair self-consciously, her eyes trained on the ever darkening grounds.
It wasn’t often that Rita Skeeter felt intimidated. More often than not, it was quite the opposite, others were very wary around her. Whether fellow students were actually intimidated by Rita herself, or just her gossip spreading ways was irrelevant. With Evan Rosier however, things were a little different. Sixteen years old and yet he had the manner of somebody much older. Compared to the rest of the idiots that made up the sixth and seventh year males of Hogwarts, it was a refreshing change. But she still found him slightly threatening. So instead she reverted back to her typical act. Girly, playful, flirtatious. Exactly how everybody expected her to act. The perfect cover story.
“You don’t really plan on sending me away so soon do you?” she asked lightly, the beginning of a smirk playing on her lips. Of course, she had seen straight through his polite act, and had immediately decided to call him on it. And it wouldn’t hurt to do it in such a light hearted way. Openly confronting a Slytherin? Not the best idea. She inwardly grimaced to herself at the choice of words. They held a certain element of truth to them. If Evan Rosier wanted her to go, she had very little choice in the matter. The grey band on her robes said it all.

I WANT TO HATE EVERY PART OF YOU IN MEI can't hate the ones who made me Evan was more than used to having people do as he asked them. He was a tall, foreboding physical presence and the harshness of his voice, his willingness to be blunt about everything and the tense atmosphere that seemed to surround him like an unpleasant aura was enough to strike fear and obedience into those that encountered him. He was almost six feet of muscle due to his intense morning workouts of running and swimming around the lake every morning and the tattoos inked onto his skin only added to the picture of menace. And most everyone that knew him knew that to dissatisfy him was to risk consequences because he was quick to anger and wasn’t above drawing his wand or even pulling punches. He had grown up around muggles and had to learn to fight like them to or risk permanent exclusion from the wizarding world (and that was not something that bore thinking about).
And although because Rita was a girl, he wasn’t about to start using his fists on her, he would draw his wand. She wasn’t a pureblood, Evan was, and although there were a lot of other reasons as to why it wasn’t wise to deny Evan Rosier what he wanted, at the end of the day blood status was what it all boiled down to. And so he was both surprised and not by her words. He knew she had caught the underlying malice in his tone but at the same time he knew that Rita Skeeter didn’t know everybody’s business because she left after someone told her to go away at the first time of asking. Knowing her she probably didn’t leave at the second or third time of asking either. He respected that side of her, the side that was unwilling to bow down to what anybody else wanted. And yet however he didn’t particularly like being the one she was refusing to obey. He battled with himself for a few moments on what to say or do in response.
Most people would be flattered by her words but Evan wasn’t so easy to trust. He knew not to let Rita’s flattery get the better of him but he figured it would be quite a game to see how she reacted if he did. All the time he would still be in control of the situation because he wouldn’t actually be swung by her flirtatious words but she would think that he was. That sounded like an interesting experiment; to see how far Rita Skeeter would go to get something from the “very interesting” Evan Rosier. ”Perhaps I won’t send you away so soon.” He shifted his body so that he was leaning side on against the railings, that way she could see him completely; his open body language suggesting that he was relaxed in her presence. ”I have to admit I’m curious as to why you find me so interesting. But you must know by now that I’m not the most willing to give over my secrets.” Those words were a tad risky since they implied he did actually have secrets to hide but then didn’t everyone? Rita didn’t know; his secrets could be that he slept with a teddy bear or that he held dreams of becoming an opera singer. Both of those options in Evan’s eyes were decidedly less embarrassing than the actual truth.
It was at this point in the conversation that most people would smile warmly but Evan could do no such thing and so instead he settled on a politely neutral expression as he awaited her response. ”Or maybe there’s another reason you want to stick around?” Because if she was going to call him up on things then he would do the same. ”Not attracted to me are you Rita? I don’t think I’m the relationship type.” He smirked; the closest thing to amusement that ever appeared on his face.

It did not escape Rita’s attention that Evan moved his body around to face her. Then again, it was hard to imagine that such a movement would go unnoticed by any female in the castle. There was no denying the fact that Evan Rosier was attractive. And it was not only in a physical sense; it was the dark, brooding and mysterious aura he had going on as well. She smirked at his words. Of course he wouldn’t be sending her away. Not now she had turned on the flirtatious charm. But his sudden movement put her off guard a little. It was not like him to be so open or expressive in his body language. And so she didn’t change her position, giving herself a few extra moments to evaluate the situation.
The next words that came out his mouth were far more desirable than the last. So he did have secrets he wanted to keep. She had been right, as had the majority of the Hogwarts population. But Rita suspected her interest ran far deeper than anybody else’s did. It usually did. The sense of knowing something that nobody else knew was addictive to her; she craved the feeling of having that knowledge. And she knew exactly why. It gave her power over the individual or individuals in question. Whether it ended with them begging Rita to keep her mouth shut or them standing hopelessly as she spread the rumour round the school, it didn’t matter to her. It was the feeling of being in control that mattered. And yes, power over Gryffindors and younger students was great. But it was Slytherin secrets she really wanted. Having that level of control over the purebloods? That sounded ideal.
“I figured as much. But you should know that I have a hard time backing down when presented with such a challenge.” Yet she still avoided looking at him whilst speaking, instead choosing to stare into the darkened grounds. But at his next words, she felt herself smiling, despite her best intentions. Oh yes, there was definitely another reason she wanted to stick around. Whatever secret Evan was hiding would be known to her by the end of the night if she had anything to do with it. Of course, he was hardly going to tell her straight up, but she had another idea in mind. A secret in return for a favour, so to speak. It wouldn’t be the first time, and Rita knew it certainly wouldn’t be the last. It worked far too well for her to consider the reputation it gave her.
She turned in to face Evan, mimicking his body language. She let her eyes run up and down his body, before coming back to rest on his eyes. “That’s a shame,” she started lightly, a small smirk resting on her lips. “But I’m sure we can come to some sort of arrangement.” She fought to keep her voice playful and flirtatious; it wouldn’t do her any good to have Evan aware of how desperate she was for this secret. No, that could result in things ending very badly.

I WANT TO HATE EVERY PART OF YOU IN MEI can't hate the ones who made me It was surprising to the Slytherin sixth year how easy it was to read Rita. Of course that could all be part of her clever ruse to make herself appear a certain way when instead she was thinking something entirely different. But Evan was willing to guess that this time that wasn't the case. Because the look on her face at almost every word that Evan spoke, her face changed in some way. Either lit up the prospect of finding out his secret or a flirtatious smile graced her attractive features and it struck Evan just how easy it would be to play her if he so wanted to. Which he did. He thought that was mightily weak of her, was she so confident in her ability that she overlooked the possibility that other people could perhaps be monitoring her in the same nosy, scrutinising way that she did to everyone else? Even if she was simply playing him, Evan was certain that she would be getting nothing from him. So she realised he had secrets, that was okay. A slip, but it wasn't the end of the world simply proof that he was human and did, though not often, make mistakes.
"I'm well aware of that." He stated in response to her first words, watching her with patient intrigue. Not at all miffed that she didn't look at him whilst speaking. It was part of her game or act or whatever this was. As it was with all of the Slytherins. There wasn't often a conversation between people in the house of the snake went by without some sort of tactical manoeuvring so it wasn't unusual and if he was that easily offended he wouldn't have lasted long. He couldn't help but take in her appearance again. He had quite a good view from side on. He wasn't usually one to eye up girls. He'd seen what relationships had done to a lot of the population of Hogwarts. Heartbreak and pain or turning to soppy love struck idiots that started putting their partner first. No, that was a weakness and so he mostly stayed away from women. But he was male and sixteen and Rita would be worth his time he imagined, just one night and she wouldn't hurt his status, probably just improve it. Especially if he came out on top of this little encounter. It was a fantasy he could entertain.
Or perhaps do more than entertain. Her next words pricked his interest. If he didn't know better he'd think she'd read his mind. His eyes darkened slightly as he raised an eyebrow. Lips twitching in a satisfied way as she looked him up and down. He took a very noticeable, deliberate step towards her. The hand on the metal railing shifting towards her. "What sort of arrangement? There's always a catch with you, Rita." He kept his eyes on her face, his expression blank except for a tiny shade of interest peeking through just to make sure she knew she wasn't fighting a losing battle. ”You must know, I’m not an easy person to make compromises with. This had better be an arrangement…. Worth my time.” He spoke slowly, and of course, every word was deliberately spoken and meaningful.
