One might think that studying late on a Saturday night was something to just be considered outrageous. Who in their right mind would be studying on a Saturday? Yeah, that was something that Maddy questioned regularly. Spending time in the library on a Saturday night was not her idea of having fun, either. plus, she couldn't be sure how many Slytherins would be lurking about the hallways at this hour. Directly defying her parents (on accident) by getting target by a simpering, stuck up, out to get the world Slytherin would not help. No matter how unintentional that it might end up being. Staying just a little bit trapped in the library peering at the light fading from the sky from over the edge of her book didn't seem like such a bright idea anymore. She should really have thought things true just a bit more.
Who needed to attempt a bit of relaxation in the library? In fact, now that she thought of it, who would even really want to? Not that Maddy had anything against the library. Really, she didn't, in fact, she liked it quite well. It was just that the library was associated with studying and school work, which a plentiful sum of her fellow students didn't even consider finishing on a Saturday. Especially not a Saturday, for that matter.
The idea to come down to the library had seemed like a good one at first. She had needed to escape the complete and utter chaos of the Gryffindor common room in order to work on her homework. Maddy hadn't thought twice about walking through the hallways right after dinner, when the light had been plentiful and had suppressed the shadows to the space behind the suits of armor. Now, however, the darkness had seemed to take over, sweeping over the corridors and making it almost appear haunted. Maddy didn't even have to being inhabiting those corridors to know that. She had experienced the overwhelming, suffocating fear of the dark corridors as a first year. Even as a seventh year, that wasn't something that she wanted to experience. Especially with the currents circumstances of the wizarding world (and Hogwarts).
It was funny how if you just swept a bit of darkness over things they suddenly became all the more frightening. Walking around during the day, it as hard to believe the comforting corridors could be so dark and ominous.
Maddy sighed softly as she lifted her eyes from her book, peering once again out the nearby window. She should be heading back soon, there was only so much time left before lights out. So much time before everything turned black. Maddy simply shook her head and rearranged herself to be comfortable on the small little love seat. She hadn't been all that surprised in discovering it. After all, the first time that she had encountered this little alcove was in her second year. Therefore this whole situation had been more like rediscovering one of her favorite little hiding spots from when she was younger. She had missed it hear, the comforts of the library, just a little bit more isolated than sitting in the middle of the library. Doing homework required having a lot less attention on her. It was surprising how easily distracted she could get.
Maddy lowered her eyes back to her book to continue reading. It was a wizarding novel, and quite interesting at that. Her mother had suggested it to her, and she had finally agreed to give it a try. At the moment she had all of the time in the world to read, too. She had finally finished her homework earlier, so she had the rest of the weekend to enjoy the novel. that was, unless one of her friends dragged her off to do something they deemed much more exciting. Of course, Maddy would most likely end up agreeing with her friends. That was how it usually worked, the outgoing Madeleine McKinnon, always happily (at least, sometimes) dragged away from her books.
Once more, however, Maddy was dragged from her book, which she had become quite absorbed in, once again, over the past few moments. She could hear the footsteps that seemed to be approaching, a mild concern entering her mind. She was just a bit anxious to see whoever it would be, her earlier concerns arising just a little bit. Maddy arose from her lounged position, sitting up and placing her book beside her. Maddy's bracelet's jangled slightly together as she drew her wand, partially, keeping it in easy reach as she stood. "Who's there?" She queried, her voice strong and giving no hint to her concerns. Madeleine McKinnon was a force to be reckoned with. there was no way a few footsteps were going to frighten her.

----------------------------- Two to three weeks into the start of the semester and Lily was surprised that she hadn’t visited the library. Of course these days she was extremely busy. Her homework load was always the first thing that needed to be tackled. Pile up her duties as Head Girl and the red haired girl was even more stressed. Everyone was not lying when they said that seventh year was the hardest after fifth year. This year especially was hard for Lily. This past summer Petunia had married a man who was, according to Lily, a ‘walrus’ of a man. Her sister had invited him over for dinner and she could not wait to get out of that blasted kitchen. Even though the two Evans girls were not speaking she still loved her sister dearly. She still wanted what was best for her sister. She had kept a bite on her tongue that night, careful not to speak her own mind. She had found herself thinking about Hogwarts and the new laws. The new laws were everywhere. In the daily prophets, pinned to the Gryffindor common room. They were even in the letters that they got before the term! She sighed softly as she gazed at the fire place. It was two hours before dinner was over and she had decided to skip it that night. Her plate was half finished but she could not eat any more. Her stomach had been in knots all day.
She was nervous about her patrol duties. That first night came an unexpected and nasty shock when she had ran into a group of Slytherins. They were about to do some serious damage when they saw the small silver bracelet on her left wrist and the name. Grumbling they had left her alone. The bracelet was one way to determine who owned who now. The other alternative was the collar and Lily downright refused to wear that. No matter what the consequences were. Surprisingly James had agreed to it. The corners of her lips twitched upwards into a small smile at the mention of the Head Boy. Her partner and, now, her owner. She supposed she had done the right thing and let him claim her. Merlin it was better than any Slytherin. Who knows what they might had done to her! She shook her head to herself as she got up, deciding that she needed a distraction. Lily climbed up the stairs to her dorm. It was a wonderful thing that the Heads had gotten a whole dorm to themselves. It meant that she could stay up late and do whatever. Of course Lily wouldn’t be THAT foolish. She slowly opened the door and glanced around, frowning, wondering what on earth she was going to do.
Fifteen minutes later she was seen walking out of the common room, her bag slung over her shoulders. She had a couple of essays that needed to be done. What better time to do it then now when most of the school’s population was at the great hall for dinner. The library would most likely be empty and she would have her favorite seat. What more could a red haired girl ask for? A grin spread across her face as she glanced down at her bag, making sure that she had her old, yet lovely, copy of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. When she was a child Lily loved reading the old muggle classic books. She still does to this very day. She tried to make room for her reading times when she was swamped by homework and her duties. Lily was the type of person that wanted to stay on top of everything. Sometimes she would find her weekends completely homework free. The weekends were her time alone recovering from the week. She ran a hand through her hair, her emerald green eyes were lost in thought as she slowly entered the library. She glanced around. The library seemed empty alibi for several students, all of them Ravenclaw. Lily made a dash for her seat right in the corner of the library.
Time passed. Lily didn’t know how much time until she finally finished all of her essays. She glanced out of the window, surprised at how the night had fallen so quickly. She was not worried. As Head Girl Lily had several privileges than the other students. One of those was patrolling the corridors at night. That meant that the red haired girl was allowed at nighttime. Sometimes by herself, sometimes by James. Lily shook her head at herself as she started to pack her things. I better get back to the common room anyways, she thought to herself. The library seemed eerie. Shadows were thrown across the floor. The hair at the back of her neck started to prick up a little. She pulled out her wand, finally paying attention to where she was heading. Somehow, she was convinced that she was not alone. And she was right. A voice sprang out from the darkness and Lily had to fight down the urge to laugh. She was paranoid for nothing it seemed! “Just me Maddy.” She stepped out of the shadows so her longtime friend would see her. “You gave me quite a scare.” Lily was relieved more than anything to see a familiar face. “I haven’t seen you at all this year yet.” [/size] Tagged. Was it really so surprising that the darkness seemed to drag on as she waited for a reply? Maddy couldn't formulate a simple respond to her self queried question as she waited for a response. It didn't seem as id time would pass quick enough for the response to come. The worry seemed to get to her, at least in the slightest bit, anyway. The hand that had been readied to reach for her wand had begun to shake ever so slightly in her slight little bit of worry. It felt as if her mind was moving sluggishly with her thoughts, as if all of the worry she was currently experiencing was weighing it down. The witch blinked, steadying her hand. If it was a not so welcome guest, it would do her know good to show her fear to them. No, then they would turn it against them. Maddy gave a small shiver. It truly was terrifying.
All of the worry these days was something that Maddy wasn't a fan of, that much was obvious. When they had received their typical Hogwarts letters with the new laws attached Maddy had been shocked to the core. Of course, everyone had anticipated something happening sooner or later, the simple things that covered were what affected her the most. The laws hadn't even been directly connected to her, either. No, they were more or less in relation to her best friend (who was also practically a sister to her). Lily Evans. They had known each other for a number of years (which felt like forever at times). Maddy had every right to be fretting just a bit over her friend. After all, Lily was a muggleborn, to whom these laws would apply to in the greatest sense of things. Though Maddy hadn't had a chance to speak to her yet in this new year at Hogwarts she still wanted to discuss them, possibly. She worried quite a bit about her friend.
The war had worn through quite a few of Madeleine McKinnon's defenses. It wasn't as if she had all that much to worry about, being a pure blood, other than her family being known as blood traitors. Most of her worries had been directed at others. How Lily would be doing after the announcement of the laws, as well as keeping her little sister safe from harm. The Slytherins (and potential Death Eaters) seemed to rule the school this year, in a way. Still, no matter the condition there was no way Maddy was letting them harm a hair on her little sister's (or friend's) head. The circumstances had made Maddy just a bit more fierce under all of the extra pressure and raised hostility towards them (the "blood traitors," muggleborns, and half-bloods).
Madeleine McKinnon's mouth formed a broad grin of relief when a figure finally emerged from the shrouding darkness of the library. "Lily!" The young witch exclaimed, letting out a relieved breath in the process and immediately moved her hand from her wand. It was only Lily, thank goodness and what not. Maddy could barely contain her relief and felt like flinging her arms around her best friend. Thankfully, though, she was just a bit too tired to manage more than slumping back down on the love seat, still smiling at her friend. That little fit of fear had taken quite a bit of energy and worry. It would have been a wonder if she hadn't slouched down for just a little bit of rest, especially at this hour.
The teenage witch grinned at her best friend from her new perch on the couch. She simply shook her head when Lily said that she gave her quite a scare. "I believe you frightened me quite a bit more." Maddy replied, quite a bit more herself than she had been a few moments earlier. "It felt as if my heart as prepared to leap out for just a moment there!" The girl added, giving a soft chuckle and rolling her eyes slightly, though a bit of worry still evident in her posture (and only just the slightest bit of her fright). Her confidence felt like it was returning, bit by bit. Maddy felt as if everything had been set of of it's proper manner by all the things that were going on in the wizarding world. She, herself, was different. And Maddy hated it, absolutely thoroughly.
Maddy's grin broadened in response to her friend's comment about not having seen her all year. She agreed completely, and Maddy had missed her quite a lot. The girl had been busy with worrying, doing her homework, as well as her relatively frequent visits to the hospital wing (for a reason must students wouldn't really guess). "I know." Maddy commented, bringing her feet up to cross them underneath her before she continued. "It really has been terrible. We saw each other much more last year." Maddy shook her head as she remembered their sixth year at Hogwarts. Things had definitely changed between only this past year and this current one.
"Anyway." Maddy murmured to herself though her words were audible. "What have you been up to since school started back up?" The young witched had continued after only a bit of a pause, her blue eyes inquiring curiously. "Well, and the summer holidays and what not, I suppose. I forgot about those." Maddy added, giving a bit of a grin and a shrug as she settled into the comfortable couch to listen to her best friend's response. They had quite a bit of catching up to do, if Maddy remembered correctly, which she most certainly did.

----------------------------- The corners of her lips twitched upwards into a small smile as she gazed up at the other girl. Madeline was something like another sister to Lily. The kind of sister that she always wished that Petunia was. If only she could have put her hate of the magical world aside! That was her number one wish. With the war going in Lily was uncertain about her future. With the new laws in place she doubt that her family would live. Enough of that, a voice whispered in her mind as she shook her head at herself. Do not think about that. Not now. She chuckled a bit. “We both frightened each other at least. Although I am sure that it would be the last thing to be worried about.” Her eyes glittered with something that could not be placed. She sat down on the other side of her best friend. She lowered her gaze at the table, frowning a bit now. It was weird how a summer between years could change everything. She was in more danger in the wizarding world than anything. She ran a hand through her red hair. Her emerald green eyes were now glittering with nothing but worry. She was in slight thought. Half paying attention to her best friend, the other half was worrying about what would happen to her after Hogwarts.
She thought and worried about it to the point where she had shaken her head at herself. Lily was being foolish again. She had every right to worry. She snickered a bit at the other girl. “Quit being dramatic Mads.” She teased slightly. “I could have jumped out behind you and tackle you to the ground of course.” This was what she missed the most. The constant battering and teasing. Of course she could do that with James. But it would be on a whole different level than this. Lily hated the fact that she was now skittering around him. She was waiting. Waiting for the pureblood James to spring. She gave her friend a half smile. “Last year was different than this year.” She sighed. “Last year was normal. We should set a date aside just for us girls.” She grinned hugely. “I’ll make sure to get my homework done before then.” And her duties as Head Girl? Well Lily would have to work around that. She just wanted to make sure that she saw all of her friends this year. She had already established a routine that she would work around her duties.
It was her question that made Lily paused, shifting herself to be more comfortable. “Well a lot really. The summer holidays were absolutely dreadful. My sister is getting married to a walrus of a man. He’s just…horrible. Sweet to her but he’s so….so….” She paused again as her voice trailed off. She was trying to contain her temper. Vernon was nothing but normal. It was surprising at how she found herself thinking that about him. “I suppose I still love my sister to see her happy with someone else than him of course.” That last part she mumbled a bit. Her eyes glittered like cold stones now. “The dinner a week before we started school was just awful. But enough about my home life.” Lily did not want to dwell on that now. She bit down on her lower lip, hesitating now. “I got claimed. And you will never guess by whom.” She said those words slowly. Her hesitation was full on now. “I know you will more than likely kill him but we talked it through and set some ground rules. It was James.” She fidgeted a bit running a hand through her hair again.
She had admitted to herself that she was still nervous. Something that she never have told James. It was something that had been in her nightmares ever since that night in the common room. “I’m still scared about it. I know he has changed a bit. I know he has been deemed a blood traitor. But…there are times where I skittered around him. Terrified to say the wrong thing that would set him off. We agreed it would be a lot more easier than me being claimed by a Slytherin.” A forbidden thought of Snape entered her mind and she frowned a bit. Why was she thinking about him now? Her mind whirled with thoughts and questions about him. Was he still the same as always? Enough, she thought, scowling a bit at herself. “What have you been up to this summer?” She questioned her longtime friend. “I am sure that your summer holidays were better than mine.” She gave her another half-smile. There was no reaction yet from Madeleine about Lily being claimed. She wanted it to be kept hush hush. Or in other words a secret. Of course Hogwarts is all about the rumors that recently started up. And it hadn’t been a whole month yet! Lily had every right to be scared out of her mind. A comfortable silence spread between the two girls as she started becoming lost in her thoughts again. Maddy nodded in agreement when Lily said that they had frightened each other, even though she was sure it was the last thing they should be worried about. The teenage witch agreed completely with her friend. They were much more important, bigger things to be worried about than which one person could be lurking in the library this late. Granted, it could have been anyone, but Maddy was still able to look after herself. The fact that it had only her best friend, who she had been looking forward to seeing for a long time further proved that detail. Even one slimy little Slytherin would have been something that Maddy would have been able to handle on her own, she was certain. Maddy's lips stretched into a grin when Lily told her to stop being so dramatic, saying that she could have jumped out and tackled her just so easily as well. "But it's so fun being dramatic! Like a little vacation!" Maddy exclaimed, her grin evident in her voice and her eyes pleading with her best friend in a joking manner. The young witch loved being able to joke around with her friend like this; it was something that she had missed greatly over the long stretch of the summer months.
The teenage witch nodded in agreement when Lily said that this year was different than the previous year. Maddy completely agreed with the statement, as well as when her best friend stated that last year had been normal. However, Maddy perked up a bit when Lily mention arranging a night for just the girls to get together. "That sounds great!" Maddy exclaimed with a grin and a little clap of her hands. "It seems like I haven't seen anyone yet this year. It'd be great to catch up!" The girl continued, her voice still holding her excitement at the prospect of seeing all of their friends again. She hadn't seen practically anyone over the summer, so it would be absolutely fantastic to see how everyone was doing. Maddy blinked in slight surprise when Lily told her that her summer had been horrible. The other girl didn't completely understand how it could have been all that bad, however listening to her friend explain a bit more, the details became just a bit more fitting. "Vile?" Maddy queried as Lily trailed off.
The girl nodded in agreement when Lily said that she still loved her sister but would just like to see her happy with someone else. Maddy definitely saw Lily's point. In the future she would like to see her little sister happy with someone worthy of her (of course). However, she wouldn't really want her to get married to someone like the man Lily had described to her, either. But through it all Maddy would still want her younger sister to be happy. The other witch was sure that she couldn't begin to understand how peculiar that might have been, being around them with everything that had happened in the past. She could barely imagine how awful the dinner Lily had described with them could have been. Maddy was sure she didn't even have an idea at how absolutely awkward and uncomfortable that it could have been.
Madeleine's eyes narrowed when Lily mentioned that she had been claimed, having all intention to go after whoever had decided to claim her best friend. And, maybe if a few hexes were thrown, well, who would have been mad at her for that, really? Especially not if it was some slimy little Slytherin. Her lips curled up slightly at how true Lily's assumption to the fact that she would probably kill him. However, she was a bit comforted by the fact that Lily said that they had set some ground rules. At least that meant that it surely wasn't a Slytherin. That bunch wouldn't have allowed anyone to be on an even ground of sorts like those rules with them. Maddy's eyes did, however, narrow just a bit more when Lily said that she had been claimed by James, her eyebrow arched slightly. "Feel free to mention to him that he'll have me on his tail if he's stupid." Maddy stated, a bit coldly and cracking her knuckles for emphasis. "And maybe that none of his little friends will be able to protect him from Madeleine McKinnon's fury. Or hexes." She validated her point with a sharp nod of her head. There was no way that little Gryffindor boy would do anything to hurt her best friend. There was absolutely no way.
The girl nodded once again in agreement when Lily said that he had changed a bit and that she knew that he had been deemed a blood traitor. However, like Lily, she agreed that it was better than having her best friend claimed by a Slytherin. Maddy sighed when Lily asked what she had been doing over the summer, saying her summer had surely been better that her's. "Well, I don't know if you heard, but my family's been deemed blood traitors, like Potter's family." Maddy stated, shaking her head slightly. It was only a bit of a concern for her since they were still pure bloods, as much as she hated saying it. "Mum wanted us to stay home for the summer because of it. She said it was too dangerous, which I do agree with, a bit. But dad said that we couldn't let them think that we were scared of their declaration." The girl gave a slight shrug. Her parents loved each other, but Maddy still didn't like to get involved in any of their arguments.
"Anyway, we ended up going to France for a bit, and Italy for a bit. We still spent most of the time at home, though. It was more luck that we did anything, still. Dad almost gave in to mum and said we were better off staying home." Maddy chuckled at the end of her statement. Her mum almost always convinced her father over what was best. "The trips were still a bit fun, but there was still this dark foreboding over it all. Especially with all of the protection spells mum and dad put up when we went to bed." Maddy added shaking her head. It was one of the major things that had made the conditions of the wizarding world sink in. When her mother and father started worrying about something, Maddy knew that she needed to do the same. The summer had been a dark one, that was an absolute fact.
