------------------------------------------------------------- The fifth year Hufflepuff girl was quite nervous as she slowly walked out of her dormitory. She smoothed her baby pink dress. The dress code was that they should fall just below the ankles. Elaina Bradley remembered what the Headmaster had said before he dismissed them. His words forever in her mind. This is a dance. Not some freak show for girls which means long dresses. You will get turn away from the doors. The blonde haired girl idly wondered why she was even going to tonight’s dance. She wondered what Ben had thought of the announcement. Her brother had commented on nothing when she last asked him about it. She could probably guess that he was just as nervous as she was. She idly wondered what the other students were thinking. If they were mentally preparing themselves for possibly their last night. Oh that was a nice thought to have. A small shudder ran through her as she walked out of the common room. She made sure that her soft blonde curls were in place. A phrase had ended up in her mind and she couldn’t get it out of her head. Dress up for slaughter. She almost fainted right then and there. Elaina was sure that she would end up having either a heart attack or a panic attack. For a minute she thought about turning and locking herself in the dorms.
Oh yes, she thought with a slight wince. She could see her head of house coming up and knocking furiously on the door. The Head would be demanding that she attend as was required with all students. Brown eyes glazed straight ahead as she continued to take deep calming breaths. It probably won’t be that bad, she thought to herself in an attempt to calm her. She wanted to put on a good front for the others. If I die tonight then I die tonight. It was a scary thought indeed to have at the age of fifteen. When she should be worrying about normal things that teenagers worry about. Elaina let out a small snort at ‘normal’. I don’t know what’s normal and what’s not anymore, she thought to herself sighing a bit. Four years in the wizarding world was enough to twist your sense of normal. Especially living in a house with halfbloods. Elaina was a bit disturbed at the directions her thoughts were going in as of this moment. She silently prayed to Merlin for protection. Her brother must not know her thoughts. She could just imagine the look on Ben’s face if he knew what she was thinking. He would go completely crazy.
It was a wonder that he hadn’t gone crazy at this time, she mused as she entered the Great Hall. It was here that she blinked, startled. I have to pay attention to my surroundings better, Elaina thought to herself as she slowly walked forward. As that thought entered her mind she gazed around. Students were either huddled together or sitting by themselves. Her heart fell a bit as she noticed that Ben wasn’t in yet. I hope he remembered that he has to come, Elaina thought somewhat crossly at her brother as she made her way to one of the tables. She bit down on her lower lip as she lifted up a goblet and glanced at it suspiciously. It was rather hard to tell whether or not the drinks were spiked by a pureblood. She slowly drank it, tasting butterbeer and her face light up. She made herself comfortable while glancing every now and then at the door, hoping it was either her brother, or her boyfriend Ryan.

Post by ANDROMEDA NIOBE BLACK on Feb 22, 2013 22:31:10 GMT
Andromeda examined herself in the mirror for what seemed like the billionth time. And it might have been, since she’d been getting ready for a few hours. She didn’t consider herself a girl who was particularly concerned with appearance. It seemed to her the only reason women cared so much as they wanted to make an impression on their male counterparts, and that particular branch of human still remained foreign to her.
But she was a Black, to whom good impressions were everything. And considering the—unnatural—nature of this ball, she felt her parents would be most displeased with her if she made a fool of herself. And perhaps her sisters had had a greater influence on her than she had previously accepted. Both of them possessed a certain elegance Andromeda could never hope to match, and Narcissa was much more expert of matters of apparel. They were both always critisizing her for her appearance.
Andromeda had sought her advice earlier in the evening, though she had chosen to get ready and arrive alone. She and her sister ran in very different circles, and she didn’t want to be one to hold her back. And she didn't particularly feel like dealing with her sister's snide remarks and criticism this evening.
With a sigh she turned away from the mirror and made her way outside. The halls leading down the great hall were dark and quiet. Andromeda was running a bit late, so most of her fellow housemates had already arrived. She didn’t run into anyone until she reached the room where the dance would be held, which was odd. In the past, she noticed that many students preferred to linger in the halls (especially couples). But not this time. Considering this dance was mandatory, it seemed no one dared.
As she thought back to the Headmaster’s announcement, she couldn’t help but shudder. Normally she didn’t mind dances. They weren’t her favorite thing, but she would attend them willing enough. But this time an ominous air seemed to hang about the room. Her skin prickled beneath the silky fabric, and she almost wanted to run. A part of her kept insisting that he’d merely been toying with them, there would be no bloodbath, but she didn’t think so. And she couldn’t help but wonder what their motivation was for including the muggleborns and halfbloods. But she did not wish to dwell on that.
She reached the great hall and stepped inside. Not wishing to attract attention to herself she didn’t linger. The problem was she had no one to talk too, and found herself standing awkwardly to the side. It was weird, seeing everyone in masks. Some people she was still able to recognize instantly, others she had a faint inkling, while still others were complete strangers. And it would appear she also fell into the last category, judging by the number of men who were giving her sideways glances. She knew they couldn’t have recognized her, because no one ever looked at her like that. She looked down at herself. Her dress was a little tight-fitting in places, and she did have a rather full figure, but still. She glanced around again, feeling suddenly very uncomfortable. There was something about their looks. It was almost, predatory, which would make her the prey.
She got up and began moving again, deciding that it would be best not to be alone tonight. She scanned the crowd and found another girl who was standing alone. She didn’t recognize her, but that was preferable, as there was a better chance she wouldn’t recognize Meda either. She approached her; cautiously at first, trying to decide what she could possibly say to break the ice. But the only thing that came to mind was, “That’s a lovely dress.”

------------------------------------------------------------- Blue sparkling eyes quickly scanned the Great Hall. It was clear that Elaina was starting to get cross with waiting. It also didn’t help that she was full of nerves and wanted to be in the comforting arms of someone similar. Ryan, dammit hurry up, she thought. She was hoping that her thoughts would call him but she was wrong after a few minutes. She tried to stifle a groan as she took another sip of the butterbeer. She would feel much better with either him or her brother by her side. That way she knew that nothing would come to harm her. The blonde haired girl made a face as a voice hissed that she was being nothing but ten shades of crazy. No harm was going to come to her tonight. She would leave the dance with everything attached and still in place. There was a worried look in her eyes now at her thoughts. She couldn’t be so sure but it was better to keep a clear head than to panic about nothing. She sighed softly to herself shaking her head. She was just being completely nuts today. All of it was due to her nerves she supposed. Yes, that was it. All Elaina would have to do was to blame being nervous out of her mind.
She bit down on her lower lip, once more scanning the hall. She slowly took another sip and glanced up hearing a soft voice. The young woman was complimenting her dress. “Thank you,” She told her as she perked up a bit. Social outings were something that the fifth year girl lived on. People had described her as a social butterfly. Never awkward but she seemed to always fit anywhere. She was that way when she was a child. “A couple of friends and I went shopping. You wouldn’t believe the deals and discounts we got.” Her eyes continued to sparkle. Deals and discounts were something that Elaina was starting to look into. Getting something better for less. She was very well off but that doesn’t mean that she could start saving up money. Who knows what else she would need later on down the road. Elaina glanced at the other girl up and down. “Your dress is pretty to. I love it and that shade of color.” Leave it to Elaina for being bubbly and social. “Where did you get it? It compliments you.” Two odds in one there was a chance that the blonde haired girl was talking to a Slytherin.
Knowing her luck it would be one of those Slytherins girls who gossiped like crazy. She didn’t recognize her. “Elaina Bradley. Fifth year Hufflepuff.” She told the other woman proudly. Despite what other people might believe, Elaina was proud to be in Hufflepuff. While it was true it was a house where no one wanted to be in, everyone was like family. In the common room there was a general family friendly atmosphere. There were times that she wished that she was in Ravenclaw with her brother. Then maybe she would get to see him a lot more often than just a few times. At the thought of her brother she glanced around and rolled her eyes at the door. It was official. Elaina was going to murder Benjamin when she saw him. Shaking her head to clear her thoughts she turned to the other woman, wanting to know who it was. “I don’t believe I recognized you before.” The other girl looked a bit older than her. Give or take a couple of years at least. The one thing that Elaina loved doing was meeting new people. She ran a gentle hand through her hair. Her blonde hair fell in soft waves down her back.

Perhaps it was just because she had grown up a Black, or that she belonged to house that was mostly full snobs, to be honest; but Andromeda knew that any compliment, no matter how well it was intended, could be taken the wrong way. Which was why she visibly relaxed when the girl’s face brightened and she said thank you. Also, Meda wasn’t normally one to make people smile, not genuinely, and the feeling gave her small rush of pleasure. Perhaps she should try to do it more often.
She nodded politely when she girl described how she had gotten the dress. ‘Deals and Discounts’ weren’t something she was familiar with. When you’re family was rolling wizard gold you didn’t shop for cheap. The more expensive and extravagant, the better. She smiled wistfully, the way the girl described it, well, it sounded really fun. Shopping for dresses with friends. It wasn’t exactly an experience Andromeda was familiar with.
She smiled grateful when the girl complimented her dress. It was a rule to return a compliment upon receiving one, but with this girl it didn’t sound like she was following the rules of conversation, it again sounded genuine. She started to say thank you, but the girl had already responded with another question. “Where did you get it? It compliments you.”
Andromeda thought about responding, well, that’s because it was custom-tailored for me, but even in her head it sounded pretentious and snobby, so instead she just replied, “Thank you, my—my mother got it for me.” It was true enough, her mother had had it made for her to wear to a relative’s wedding, and when Andromeda had told her about the dance she had sent it to her. She knew her mother would have preferred to make an entirely new dress, but there hadn’t been time.
Andromeda smiled politely and nodded her head when the girl introduced herself. “That’s a beautiful name.” But her chest was sinking a little bit. This girl wasn’t a slytherin, but she had suspected as much when she hadn’t recognized her. But most people included the fact that they were pureblooded in these introductions, especially recently. So the fact that she hadn’t, probably meant that she wasn’t one. She probably should’ve known that too, few purebloods were nice or sweet in any sense of the word. But Andromeda forced herself to relax. She hadn’t specifically said that she was a muggleborn or a half-blood, and it was a masquerade. And even if some Slytherin saw her talking to Elaina and knew she wasn’t pureblooded, they couldn’t accuse Andromeda of knowingly associating with someone of lesser blood status, and she was confident that she could feign ignorance should the need arise. She liked talking to Elaina, though there was a chance Elaina wouldn’t like to continue to talk to her, once she knew who Andromeda was.
“Well, I’m a Seventh year, so it would make sense that we haven’t seen each other.” She took a deep breath. “I’m Andromeda.” She paused, “Andromeda Black.” She didn’t bother to say her house name. She didn’t want to draw attention to it. And most people knew that all the Blacks, with the exception of Sirius, were in Slytherin anyway. She might be lucky and Elaina wouldn’t know that, though she seriously doubted it. She may have been quieter, by her sisters weren’t, especially Bellatrix. Bellatrix had made quite a name for herself when she’d been her, especially among the muggleborns and halfbloods. She had a bit of a reputation.
Andromeda had considered not even saying her last name, but it didn’t seem fair. Elaina hadn’t hesitated to tell Andromeda who she was, and Andromeda owed her the same courtesy. Besides, Elaina had the right to know who she was talking too. Andromeda looked back out towards the group. More people had arrived now; the dance floor was starting to become a little crowded. It may not be long before they start the night’s activities, she thought with an inward-shudder.
