The past three weeks has been nothing but a complete nightmare to one Megan Taylor. Where to start off with? Oh yes. Not barely into the semester and she had already been snatched up. Snatched up by none other than one Evan Rosier. The boy who was determined to make her life a living hell. So far he has been pretty laid back after their encounter, which terrified her. She was not sure what he was going to do next. Merlin the boy popped up at the times where she did not need him! Two days ago she had been in Hogsmeade with her group of friends. It did seem like old times. They were laughing and talking and joking. Megan had conveniently forgotten that she was taken until he showed up. Her and her two best friends had trouble controlling the boys. One glance was all it took to see the murderous look. Thankfully, nothing came out of it. Her secret was still safe although she should have told them. Alexis had already knew about it. Kevin had continued to glower murderously and she had a pretty good guess as to why. They had a falling out last year but eventually made up. The cause? Rumors about the group. And who was the rumor starter?
It was Rita of course. Between Evan and Rita, the fifteen year old girl felt pulled in between. She could tell there was something that Kevin was holding back. There was no denying that she had a small crush on him in her third year but that had passed. A small sigh escaped from her lips as she brought herself to the present. It was in the evening hours and she did not feel like eating. She had skipped dinner and was now wandering the hallways. Her bag was slung over her shoulder. Her eyes glittered with worry as she became lost in her thoughts. Megan didn’t feel like sitting at the table poking at her food and waiting til everyone was finished. She really didn’t feel like receiving concerned looks from her friends and being asked if she was alright. The black haired girl blinked around at her surroundings. She was just a walk from the dungeons. As if she would need a reminder to set foot in them! A small shudder went through her body at the thought. She felt a strong sense of dejavu and it was here that she snorted. It had been exactly like this when Evan had claimed her. Merlin can’t I get a break? She thought, running a hand through her hair.
Today she had decided it was waves. She mixed up her hairstyle depending on her mood with a simple flick of her wand. Her black eyes continued to held a worried look as she scuttled out of the danger area. The last thing she wanted to do was to have another encounter with a Slytherin. The dangerous fools. Megan bit down on the inside of her cheeks. She had sent a letter a few days ago and she had yet to hear from them. She was extremely worried. Usually it would be a whole day before she would get to hear anything. A thud broke her out of her thoughts as she whipped out her wand growing terrified. “Richard!” She squeaked, seeing her thirteen year old brother. He had looked up and grinned a bit, relaxing as he saw it was her. She did not know how much time had passed as she talked to him. It was like a weight was being lifted off her shoulders as she knew that her brother was alright. Thank Merlin he was alright. Her ears pricked forward as she heard the approaching footsteps of students and her heart almost stopped. Dinner was over already. The two siblings hastily bade a good bye as they went their separate ways. They were careful not to get caught in the stampede of students.
She quickly dashed off to the floors not wanting to go to Ravenclaw Tower. She wanted to be alone by herself for a while. Her parents were in hiding. They only had the time to contact Richard by owl before anything could happen. She felt a mixture of emotions. Happy, sadness, angry. Angry at the fact that she should have been the first to be contacted. Happy and sad because her parents were in hiding. Merlin let them be alright, she silently prayed to herself. Laughter rang throughout the corridors. Megan winced as she paid attention to her surroundings again. I really need to stop doing that, she thought, turning around. A group of seventh year Slytherins slowly advanced on her and she dashed off, realizing that she was on their floor. Their territory. There was a couple of close calls but she had managed to avoid them on the seventh floor. The Ravenclaw girl was out of breath as she looked around frantically. I need a place to hide, she thought desperately. I need a place to hide. All of a sudden a door appeared and she took no chances. She threw herself at it and dashed into the room closing the door behind her. Minutes soon ticked by and she let out a sigh of relief knowing that she was safe. The Slytherins had stalked off to find another victim. Megan glanced around the room and her eyes widen. There was a couple of comfy chairs and a bookshelf. Otherwise than that the room was pretty much empty. She had a feeling this was what they called the Room of Requirement. Good, she thought as she walked over and grabbed a book by the bookshelf and settled into one of the chairs. No one would find me here.

Kevin did not like being back at school this year. It was a nightmare. Quite literally he felt like he was living through the worst nightmare in the world. In previous years, Hogwarts had been a haven. A wonderful, magical (no pun intended) place where he hung out with his amazing group of friends, learned how to cast spells, and make potions and did other things he had once thought was not possible. It had been, as cliché as it sounds, like a dream. Every day he used to wake up in his four poster bed in the Gryffindor common room and pull the dark red, velvet sheets around him and sigh in content at how brilliant it was to be at Hogwarts. Oh how things had changed. He’d gone home for the summer and when he had returned, hell had broken loose and was wreaking havoc upon them. Or more specifically upon the muggleborns.
On just his first day back he’d been beaten and bruised, just so the Death Eaters running the school now could prove their point: That muggleborns would not be tolerated. Now he often woke up in bed in a cold sweat, dreading the day ahead and wondering what new tortures he might be subject to. He wondered how long before the luxuries he had left like his four poster bed would still be with him. He was sure it was simply a matter of time before the muggleborns were rounded up like sheep and made to sleep separately in the dungeons or something. Images he had seen of Nazi concentration camps often flashed through his mind, sending further cold shivers down his spine.
He hadn’t told any of his friends but he had considered leaving. Had actually asked in a rare moment of defiance from him, if he could since they didn’t seem to want him around anyway. But his request had been declined. He was here, their guinea pig and so now he had to stay. Kevin wished he had listened to his parents and not come back. He had thought by returning he’d be making a stand, that the brave Gryffindor within him would fight back but it’s easier said than done when someone’s putting you under the cruciatus curse. Not a day had gone by that someone hadn’t at least kicked or shoved him the corridor, he was constantly walking with his head down, tensed and waiting for the next attack. It was a horrible way to live and although he hated feeling so vulnerable and weak often he felt tears springing to his eyes. Surely he didn’t deserve this? The problem was though; already he was starting to believe it. Already the words of how he was worthless and nothing and not fit to practice magic did hit him hard and he was beginning to wonder. He had always lacked self-belief and he was an easily led person. It wouldn’t be long before he would break he was sure.
It had seemed like there was nowhere to go, nowhere to hide because even in the Gryffindor common room he couldn’t ever be alone. There would always be someone around, or the risk of someone coming into his shared dorm and these days, Kevin was becoming more and more recluse. He loved hanging out with his friends but that was difficult when the girls were in a separate house and even meeting in the library or an unused classroom after lessons was risky. Plus some days he just wanted to curl up and be alone and that was how he had stumbled upon the room of requirement. It was a godsend of that he was certain. A place where no one could find him. A place to just sit and relax and be and feel human again.
At dinner, his worry level had intensified when he had not seen Megan and although part of him wanted to search her out and find out if she was alright, the stronger part of him just wanted to go to the room and collapse. From there he would send her a message and find out if she was okay. There had been a moment when he and his best mate had decided to go and hunt down her tormentor but it wasn’t like they could win. As much as Kevin would take seeing him suffer for a little while even if it meant he had to suffer even more in the long run, he would do it for Megan. But not tonight. Tonight he was exhausted from several days of being terrorised. He hated that he had to start putting himself first. It was selfish and not at all the sort of person he was but he had to.
And so he limped into the room of requirement only to find that it was already occupied. By none other than Megan. He breathed an audible sigh of relief. Just seeing her curled up in a chair with a book lifted his heart and brought a smile onto his face. Yes, this was perfect. ”Megan.” He walked over to her, dragging his injured leg and falling unceremoniously into a chair. ”Why weren’t you at dinner?” He demanded of his friend. ”We were worried sick! We thought maybe...” He trailed off, shuddering, not wanting to think about what horrors Evan might inflict on her or already done so.

Her attention was focused on the book as she pushed a strand of hair out of her eyes. She curled up even tighter as she turned the page. It was a muggle mystery book. One of Megan’s favorite generas to read. Her head was on her arm, a most comfortable position to the black haired girl. She ran a hand down the page lost in thought. This was the perfect place for Megan to be. This was the right place for her to hide. No one would be able to force their way in. A small shudder went through her body as she thought of Evan. A sigh escaped from her lips as she held a worried look in her eyes. She wondered what would happen if she never left the room. She would live in this room. At the thought a small shaky smile appeared on her lips. Her friends would have to drag her out of the room to spend time with them that was for sure! If only they knew, she thought nervously. If only they knew. Megan was doomed to live the rest of her life with Evan. She would try to get away from it as best as she could. Maybe disguised herself and live in the muggle world. She certainly knew a lot thanks to her mother, who was muggleborn. Ethan and Kevin helped her with telling her about the latest going ons in the muggle world. As if her thoughts had called him Kevin spoke up.
At the sound of his voice Megan screamed. Her body tensed up as her thoughts went automatically to Evan. He couldn’t be here NOW. This was her second sanctuary! The first place was the Ravenclaw Tower of course. The two places that she felt safe and secure. She shook her head trying to get rid of her thoughts and terrors as she looked at the person. Once she had taken a good look at them she shook her head at her foolishness. She was being just silly again. “Kevin you startled me!” she exclaimed as she closed her book. It took her a while to calm down. Took her a while to just be herself. A faint blush spread across her cheeks as he asked why she wasn’t at dinner. She ran a hand over the book. “I just wasn’t that hungry. Didn’t quite fancied being under the glares of them. Him.” A small sigh escaped from her lips as she looked at him. “I’m sorry I worried you guys. You shouldn’t have to worry about someone like me for sure.” She gazed up at him as he collapse into a chair that was right next to her. She frowned as she watched him carefully. “Kevin are you alright? You….you didn’t get tortured again did you?” She was now filled with worry at her friend.
He was not safe in this world. She hated that. She wanted nothing better to do than to protect her friends. Even if it meant dying then so be it. Megan reached forward as she timidly laid a hand on his arm, finally deciding to tell the truth. “You remember when Evan showed up while we were all at Hogsmeade that one day?” She nervously bit down on her lower lip, suddenly scared out of her mind. “T-There was a r-reason for that I s-suppose. I….Kevin, he claimed me,” She slowly raised her hand, wincing as the bracelet jiggled a bit. She was still tensed as she eyed him wearily. There was a good reason that Megan was worried about telling him. Out of all the group he had the worst temper. She knew that he would probably go to Evan and try to murder him. Of course she probably would suspect that Evan would kill him first. He would more than likely have her watch while he does it. That was the last thing she wanted. She knew that she would have nightmares for a month. She told him everything that had happened. The claiming was still fresh in her mind. Her eyes continued to glitter with worry as she glanced over at her friend.
“Please don’t do anything rash.” She begged him as she finished. “I know you want to hurt him but…I don’t want to see you hurt in anyway. Well more hurt than you are now. I know he’ll make my life a living hell like he always does.” Megan frowned as she leaned her head on her arm again. Allison didn’t want her children to attend Hogwarts this year. She wanted to keep them at home where they were safe. Kyle could see where she was coming from. If they had any say in the matter he would be homeschooling them right now. Teaching them all he knew about magic. He also explained that they might be a bit better off considering they were only half. A small sigh escaped from her lips as she shook her head, trying to gather her thoughts.

Out of all of the possible reactions Megan could have had to his appearance, screaming was not one Kevin had anticipated. He almost started yelling himself in pure shock at her reaction. His eyes widened, as he practically jumped out of his skin. His immediate reaction after the pair of them had calmed down was to give her a ‘what the hell!?’ look but he quickly realised that he understood her jumpiness. He was exactly the same lately. Pulled taut and tense and just one tiny tap and the fear or pain could shatter you into a million pieces. And so instead he looked apologetic for scaring her, grimacing a bit as he sat himself down. ”I’m sorry.” He said softly and in those two words he knew she would be able to hear how much he understood her reaction.
That didn’t stop her blush from rising though and he was sure it was in part response to his question. His expression was soft for a while and he sighed. He knew it wasn’t nice to be out in the spotlight like that, he of all people could understand that but he wished she’d be a bit more conscientious and at least inform her friends that she wouldn’t be turning up for dinner. It wasn’t something he liked having to enforce but in these troubled times it was necessary and would save a lot of worrying on his part. ”Next time, let me know you won’t be turning up, agreed? Because we both know that I will worry about you until the end of time.” He knew he sounded like an overprotective parent but he had to. He just didn’t trust anyone anymore and although he would never say it out loud to her because she would only object and glare at him for it, but he didn’t trust that she could look after herself. Yes she was half blood and so he had slightly more status than him but she was female and that gave her just about as much chance than his muggleborn status in his eyes.
He didn’t like that she didn’t think herself worth worrying about. He realised that was rather hypocritical of him and he hoped that she wasn’t cracking under the glares and snide words like he was. As far as he knew she hadn’t suffered half as much as he had but he also knew that Megan could be quite sensitive and take things to heart. He would reassure her at some point but right now she was asking if he was alright and he shook his head stubbornly. Except his leg took this chance to argue and throbbed particularly painfully and he hissed through his teeth in pain despite trying not to. ”M’fine.” He mumbled, determined to put her first. He didn’t want to be looked at like an invalid and felt sorry for; that made him feel worse. Like a weak vulnerable victim. And he did not need to feel that way it would not help. ”I wouldn’t call it torture, just a couple of spells. Nothing I can’t handle.” He was lying, he wasn’t fine but he would manage on his own. He always managed on his own. At that thought he almost felt further cracks appearing in his thick skin and he wondered how much longer he could put on this facade.
There wasn’t chance to worry about it though because Megan brought up Evan Rosier’s name and his expression hardened into a scowling glare, stiffening in his seat. Her words made him gnash his teeth together angrily. ”What? That bastard.” He growled, anger filling him up and taking over all of his rational emotions as it tended to do. Anger was an easy emotion to deal with, Kevin could be angry and he so desperately wanted someone to take it all out on, to blame for this horrendous situation and Evan Rosier was the ideal person. He glared heavily at the bracelet on her wrist as she spoke of what happened, clenching and unclenching his fists because it took all of his strength not to reach over and rip it off of her. Once she had finished though he couldn’t help it, he stood up suddenly as if he were about to go off and find the scumbag and rip him apart, which he did have every intention of doing.
But once again his leg resented angrily; he had stood up too quickly and put all of his weight as he naturally did on his injured right leg. It hadn’t liked it and told him so with a white-hot slash of pain and he could do nothing but buckle and fall back into the seat just as Megan started telling him not to do anything rash. His eyes looked up at her, rage covering his face completely. ”Hurt him? I want to cause him so much pain that he won’t even remember his own name. I want him to feel all of the pain he has ever inflicted on anyone, on you and increase it tenfold. And then kill him.” He was breathing heavily, half in pain and half in fury. But her words did have an effect; he was seeing through the red now and he could see the fear in his friend’s eyes. She didn’t need him to engage in violence, she needed him to hold her and tell her it was all going to be okay.
”Megan,” He started, the softness in his voice returning. ”You’ve got to tell me, whatever he does to you, you have to so I can...” He trailed off, his voice cracking a bit as his mind went through all the possible horrors. ”So I can help you get through it.”

The blush on her cheeks deepened as she continued to watch him carefully. She knew she shouldn’t be too jumpy and that she should be glad it was actually Kevin instead of someone else. Megan just hoped that he would be able to understand why her first reaction was to scream. She bit down on her lower lip as she pushed a couple of strands of her hair out of her eyes. The black haired girl closed the book as she stood up to put it back on the bookshelf. Books can wait another time. Best friends were more important. Especially best friends who would be there for you no matter what. There were countless times that she had return that favor and she wanted this one to count. Besides, she had seen very little of Kevin except in passing in the halls. It was a bit frustrating at the fact that the two boys were in different houses. She had expected them all to be in Ravenclaw but of course that didn’t happen. Sometimes she wondered if the Sorting Hat knew what it was doing when it was sorting eleven year olds. Kevin was a bit too serious for his own good. Ethan, on the other hand, was a complete prankster. He was more suited to be a Gryffindor. Kevin would probably fit better in Hufflepuff. Megan could not help but to let out a small snort at her thoughts, shaking her head.
It wasn’t necessarily her place to sort her best friends. And speaking of best friends….the fifth year glanced over at him and her expression softened a bit. “I should be the one whose sorry Kevin. I should have taken a good look at who was coming into the room of requirements. You just….startled me was all. I was half expecting someone else to come out and curse me.” Shut up Megan! A small voice hissed in the back of her mind. He did not need to hear that now. Who knows what he’ll end up doing when you tell him. That was part of the reasons why she never told the two boys. She knew that they would end up jumping up and hunting Evan down. And then she would end up paying for it later when he would find her. She blushed a bit as she glanced down while nodding. Why did she feel like a little child all of a sudden? “I’ll keep that in mind. I just didn’t want to draw attention to myself or you or Ethan. I do not want to draw any negative attention. You saw how the new Headmaster was watching everyone at the Great Hall Kevin. It was a bit unnerving even though I know I’ll get it big time for sure for skipping out on dinner. I might end up sneaking to the kitchens after we get out of here.”
She attempted at a small shaky smile, shaking her head at him. “You don’t have to worry about me Kevin really. You should be worrying about more important things like our exams and homework. And the other two girls and trying to keep Ethan out of trouble.” She added as an afterthought. “Then again it might be hard to keep Ethan out of trouble knowing him he probably has detention!” Megan shook her head again. She continued to watch him carefully, frowning as she realized that there might be something wrong for him. Her worry for the Gryffindor increased as she sat up even straighter in her chair. “Kevin…..are you alright?” Right after that question he had stated that he was fine and she raised an eyebrow. She was more worried about the two boys than she was at herself lately. She had every good reason to. Megan folded her arms across her chest as she started to glare at him. The ‘I know you’re lying’ look. After all, they had known each other since first year. It was pretty easy to tell when there was something wrong with the other. It was a bit hard when the other won’t admit it but they managed to get by. “For some reason I don’t believe you.” She huffed as she watched him ever so carefully.
For a fifteen year old Megan had that uncanny mother hen look. “It does look like they tortured you more worse than me. Don’t say it’s just a couple of spells. I worry a lot about you.” She cringed into her chair, now looking wearily at him. This was what she was afraid of. This was the reason why she was afraid of telling him. “Kevin I’m begging you please please don’t do anything to him. You know as well as I do that he’ll end up coming to me and torture me possibly to death.” Her voice was cracking a bit. “I do not want you hurt on my account either and I’m scared. I’m scared that he’ll end up finding out where I live and barge into my home!” She started to shake a little as her nightmares played out in front of her. Those were always her worst fears. She instantly sat up further, completely terrified. “They’ll end up coming after you and me if you do kill him! Please Kevin!” Megan was desperate enough to make Kevin see what the Slytherins might end doing to them if he carried out his threat. She was terrified of his safety. She wanted him to be safe. She wanted him to be away from all this mess that was going on in the wizarding world. Merlin even she wanted to be away from this.
A small sigh of relief escaped from her lips as he stayed where he was. She was instantly relived that he won’t go off to get revenge. Megan was quiet for a few minutes, still worried. “You know why I was scared to tell you Kevin. I was scared because I know you. I know you would go off to find him.” It was here that she paused, suddenly grateful for a friend like Kevin and she couldn’t help but to burst into tears.

There was just something in Kevin’s DNA that made him want to look after people. He was simply selfless and would always put other people first, regardless of the situation. He supposed that that was a kind of bravery and probably the reason why the sorting hat had picked Gryffindor instead of Hufflepuff. Kevin was glad that he was in Gryffindor, simply because his best friend was one too but he wouldn’t have minded being a badger too much either. He couldn’t understand why the other houses gave Hufflepuff so much stick. In his eyes, they were probably the perfect house because of the way they treated each other with respect. He never saw that from any of the other students as a whole. He did see it in Megan though, he supposed she broke the mould as well by being a kind-hearted Ravenclaw and not like the usual snooty types always boasting about their knowledge. He was grateful that he had such grounded friends.
Friends that he had to look after. Because chances were he wasn’t going to survive this war. He could already tell by the way that the Slytherins looked at him that he was dead meat. They treated him like meat that they could cut up and butcher whenever and however they liked and it was only a matter of time before they got bored and disposed of him. Kevin could feel it coming. He knew it, it was a certainty that he couldn’t explain just that he knew. He wasn’t the type they would keep alive for slavery or testing. He was mostly a pushover, not the biggest or strongest or cleverest. It was his simple kindness that ultimately would get him killed sooner than most. To the purebloods he just wasn’t worth keeping around. He was scared. Terrified in fact. He was fifteen, much too young to die. He’d done nothing special, experienced nothing much. He hadn’t even had his first kiss yet or passed his OWLs or told anyone but his parents or his sister that he loved them. But at the same time it was a relief to know that he probably wouldn’t have to suffer for much longer.
Megan however would. All of his friends in some way shape or form would. And so if he only had months left of his life then he was going to spend it being there for them. It would be a welcome distraction from the terrifying thoughts in his brain. ”I understand.” He responded slowly, watching her carefully. He now knew why she was so jumpy. Evan was ruling her life completely now and he hated it with every fibre of his being. ”You shouldn’t go wandering off anywhere.” He said quickly, not liking a trip to the kitchens since they were many floors away from there then she’d have to make it all the way back up to Ravenclaw tower. The chances of getting caught were extremely high and the punishment certainly horrendous. ”Where ever you go, I’m going with you. But you should probably go quickly back to your common room and before curfew too.” This wasn’t unusual for Kevin; he usually tried to stop his friends from wandering around the castle after hours.
He couldn’t help but snort at her words. ”Homework and exams are the least of my worries. I don’t think OWLs are going to be of much use to me in the future to be honest.” He muttered darkly, his murky future floating before his eyes but he didn’t want to voice his dark thoughts about death, they’d only worry her further. ”I’ll be surprised if they even let me sit the exams to be honest. So let me worry about you.” He added firmly, his tone clearly stating there was to be no arguing about that. Though knowing Megan, she’d try. He rolled his eyes. ”Idiot doesn’t know when to stop. They’re already at him enough as it is he needs to calm down.” Truth was, Kevin spent all of his time worrying about every single one of his friends and Megan had to accept that she was included. Rather high up his list.
He caught her expression and couldn’t help but look mildly amused by it. He was usually so good at hiding his true feelings but lately he was beginning to lose all self control and his facade was evidently slipping. He shook his head at her, running a hand through his dark hair as well. ”There’s no point worrying about me Megs; you know I’m going to get hurt.” He held up his arm, indicating the band there that proved his muggleborn status. ”I can cope with it. I have to cope with it.” He added, a frown creasing his forehead at his last words. Injustice flared up inside him because it shouldn’t be this way. His expression slowly began to soften as she began speaking again; but she didn’t need to say the words because the terrified look on her face said it all.
He quickly shook his head, his voice gentle and hopefully reassuring. ”I won’t go after him, I swear. None of us will. He’s not going to kill you, Megan.” He genuinely did believe that. Although he wouldn’t put it past the sadistic Rosier he could see there was something else within the Slytherin’s grey eyes and he didn’t think it was death he wanted for Megan. ”He just wants to satisfy his sadistic needs, he’ll probably get bored eventually and you’ll be free.” His words were meant to be comforting but as he heard himself speak them he wasn’t sure that’s what they came across like. If anything he was probably worrying her more. Proven by the fact that she subsequently burst into tears and injured leg or not he was going to force himself to get up and go over to her. He was right, she needed a shoulder to cry on and Kevin was the best for that. He pushed himself up, grimacing and wincing as little as possible and flopped down next to her, his arms searching for her, pulling her close. ”It’ll be alright.” He said because there really was nothing else he could say. ”I won’t do anything stupid, I promise. I just want to be here for you.” His voice was quiet and soothing.
