Unlike most of the students at Hogwarts, Evan woke up early on Saturday mornings. He never needed much sleep. He could survive on just five or six hours quite easily. He felt that sleeping was just a waste of time, those precious hours could be spent doing something much more useful. So when his alarm went off at six o’clock that morning, he was greeted by grumblings and groans from his fellow sixth year Slytherins who after six years of Evan going through the same procedure every Saturday had yet to come to terms with his unusual waking hours. He ignored them as usual and eventually they all rolled over and went back to sleep, leaving Evan to pull on his jogging bottoms and a dark green polo shirt in peace. It was too early for breakfast but he had a few energy bars in his drawer and so he scoffed one of those before quietly closing the dormitory door behind him and making his way out of the common room and toward the Entrance Hall.
There was no need for a shower because he was going for his usually early morning run. Every day he woke up at six am to go for a run around the lake but on the weekends when he had more time because classes didn’t get in the way, he would go for a swim also. A lot of people thought he was crazy for wanting to swim in the lake. There was a multitude of creatures in there and some of them fairly dangerous. But ever since successfully fighting off a pair of grindylows in his first year, Evan had become almost like a creature of the lake too and after years of him swimming in it, the creatures left him alone. Every weekend without fail he would go for a swim unless the lake was frozen over of course but even in chilly temperatures he would because it was all about pushing his body to the limits, to see how strong humans really were. It was something he was fascinated by and he considered himself a deadly human being.
This morning was fresh but the sun was out already and he could feel it slowly beginning to heat up the cool air. It looked like it might be a pretty decent day eventually. Goosebumps pricked up on his flesh but he didn’t worry that he wasn’t wearing a jacket because soon enough he would be at the lake and his run would commence. He ran at a decent pace, it would take him on average forty minutes to sprint around it, half an hour on a good day. Then, once his run was over, he pulled off his shirt and bottoms, left them with his wand and a towel he had brought down with him at the foot of a rock that protruded a fair way out over the lake from which he would dive into the cold, murky waters. If anything, he actually preferred to swim in the winter, when the water was fresher and therefore felt cleaner and it felt like more of a challenge. Today felt easy compared to those harsh winter months were icy winds would beat him back and the current was much stronger.
But it was pleasant and secluded, especially over on the far side where students never bothered to walk, especially not on Saturday mornings and so he spent some time just floating in the water before eventually swimming back to Castle side, bursting out of the water and shaking the hair from his eyes. He hadn’t realised how long he had spent outside already. There were a few more students milling around now enjoying what could possibly be the last decent day of the year. He waded from the lake towards where he had left his things, wiping the majority of the damp from his legs before pulling on his bottoms, shoving his wand inside the right pocket, draping the towel around his shoulders and picking up his shirt and shoes, holding them as he walked around the water’s edge.
It was as he walked that he came across Keegan and he held up a hand in acknowledgement of her presence as he walked towards her. He had been meaning to talk to her anyway he remembered because he had received his OWL results over the summer and it was because of her tutoring him that he had managed to pass potions. He reckoned a thank you was very much in order. ”Hey.” He said, flopping down on the ground next to her. ”Guess what? I actually managed to pass potions. Only an ‘A’ but still much better than the ‘D’ I was predicted. So cheers for that Keegan, I owe you one.” He didn’t smile, or sound remotely pleased or proud of himself. He wasn’t good with emotions outside of hatred and anger.

To be quite honest, Keegan was lucky to get a ‘thank you’ from Evan, let alone have him actually, voluntarily join her by the lake to say it to her. He was an extremely solitary person; he didn’t like to spend much of his time in the company of others. Making conversation and idle chat bored him, not to mention he just wasn’t very good at it. He lacked people skills. He was blunt and to the point, speaking only when necessary and since he didn’t care if people liked him or not, his life he felt, must be so much easier than everybody else’s in that respect. He had very much been against having a tutor last year. When the potions master had told him he was failing he had merely shrugged and suggested that he no longer turned up to that class to save both of them the hassle. Instead, he had been assigned Keegan as a tutor. Who he supposed wasn’t as bad as Lily Evans but he still was disinclined to turn up to the tutoring sessions.
But turn up he did. He wasn’t quite sure what made him, perhaps the lure of spending an hour or two in Keegan’s company didn’t sound too bad because if worst came to worst then he could simply stare down her top or something. But somehow she had managed to convince him to keep his eyes on parchment and actually managed to teach him something. Not to mention that Evan actually started to enjoy their time together. Her company he realised wasn’t too bad. He had even grown to converse with her and he’d give her conversation, not just grunts of ‘yes’ and ‘no.’ She had risen up in his estimations like not many other people had and become someone he would give the time of day to. She should have been honoured when he settled himself down next to her.
He pulled the towel down his shoulders and arms, covering the tattoos inked on the upper half of his body as he dried himself off. Evan had a lot of habits that he had picked up living amongst muggles in the muggle world and getting tattoos was one of them. Although he had found a magician who did it for him these days, the first few he had ever got were done by a muggle. A hypocritical as that was due to his ideology, as long as no one found out then it was alright. The school did not much approve of his artistry but his school uniform covered them up so they could hardly complain too much. He shrugged at her words, not displaying any further emotion to satisfy her. ”Just a grade. I’ve dropped the stupid subject this year anyway.” What he really meant by those words was that he didn’t feel potions would help him in his and the Death Eater’s cause. Duelling was his focus and his pride. ”I didn’t really want to fail it in the end though. You worked some strange magic on me Keegan I’m sure.” He had told her before how surprised he was at his openness in her company. Well, open by his standards anyway.
She started talking again and Evan had a funny feeling he knew what his fellow Slytherin was going to ask him but she didn’t elaborate further than ‘Did you’ and so he continued with drying himself off. Running a hand through his wet hair and then flattening it so it didn’t dry funnily he dropped the towel, picked up his shirt and pulled it back on; finally covering his skin from the now considerably warmer air. He looked back across at her when he was done, a slight smirk twitching at his lips; the closest thing that came to a smile on his face. He nodded once in confirmation. ”Yes. I swim almost every day but you’re usually tucked up in bed still to notice.” He took in the expression on her face, his almost amused. ”It’s not that dangerous. It’s the weather when it’s cold that’s the worry more than the creatures. But on a day like today, it’s perfect for a dip.” He indicated to the great lake with a slight nod of his head. ”Why don’t you give it a go?”
Evan had only just gotten out and himself dry but he decided that if Keegan was willing to do something she’d probably thought about for six whole years at school finally today then he would join her. He imagined, as a girl, she would not want to go alone since the female sex seemed to go everywhere in groups, even to the bathroom which Evan just did not get. ”I’ll go in with you if you’re scared.” His tone was slightly teasing, thinking he might goad her into it. ”I can deal with the creatures no worries.” He automatically flexed the muscles in his arms as he said so.

He honestly hadn’t noticed Keegan checking out his tattoos. He wouldn’t have minded her doing so if he had known, they were there to be looked at, he supposed so what was the harm in people looking? He noticed a lot of things, he was the silent type who preferred to watch; his eyes were as sharp as an eagle’s when he wanted them to be. But he often found around people who he was comfortable with (which wasn’t a very long list of people, in fact he reckoned Keegan might be the only one on it) that he let his guard down ever so slightly. He knew not to trust anybody, and definitely not Slytherins but he figured that Keegan probably didn’t want to do him any harm, there really was no reason for her to. But if she did she wouldn’t stand a chance against him anyway.
So he didn’t pay her much attention as he sorted himself out, plus she was rather sneaky about it herself. As for being half naked under anyone and everyone’s gaze, including a group of girls to their right hand side that he could see ogling him, well Evan wasn’t quite your average guy when it came to the opposite sex. Honestly relationships of any kind including one night stands were few and far between. Of course he was male, he had raging hormones quite often but there wasn’t anybody at Hogwarts that he had taken a fancy to and he was above lowering himself to spending the night with anyone just to satisfy urges. If anything, the fact that he could show some level of self control in that area was just another way he could prove that he was stronger. He was quite proud of it. So they could look all they wanted because there would certainly be no touching. He had lied to himself, there was one person in Hogwarts he was quite interested in but he didn’t talk about her and he tried not think about her either. He had moments when he regretted claiming her; shameful moments when hatred blurred into lust.
He shook his head, spraying water everywhere as he attempted to rid his mind of going in that direction. He was quite thankful for once that he had company, Keegan’s company, to distract him. ”Must’ve been.” He answered dully, the lack of emotion once again apparent in his voice. Idle chat about classes and professors was not something he was particularly fond of engaging in. Especially on the weekend; he most certainly did not want to think about lessons and grades on his days off. But entering the lake, now that was a different kettle of fish. He would quite happily entertain that idea with her. He took great pride in her bewildered look but also shook his head a little bit at her naivety. Had she really thought the lake to be that unapproachable by humans? Maybe most humans couldn’t tackle it; Evan did have practice on his side.
Her laugh of incredulity therefore wasn’t at all surprising to him and he simply raised his eyebrows in response. As much as he did like Keegan and respect the Slytherin qualities within her, he wasn’t beneath looking down on her as well and in this moment he couldn’t help but feel superior to her. He had battled; he had not been frightened of what might reside beneath the waters even as a first year. He was a little puzzled by the laugh and bump on the shoulder he received from her however. He wasn’t entirely sure what the joke was, he had not made one intentionally but obviously something he had done had tickled her. Light hearted humour wasn’t something that he strived to give. Still, he couldn’t help but feel a little bit warm inside at the fact that she evidently was enjoying his company. He briefly wondered what was wrong with him but decided not to dwell on it; he had a girl to lead into the lake.
He stood up too and raised an eyebrow, dark amusement filling him up. ”I can’t make any promises.” He replied. ”If the squid launches an attack on us and it gets nasty, I’m saving my own arse.” Slytherin through and through. He started walking, wondering whether she would follow him after those words and he looked over his shoulder to talk to her. ”I told you, you’re safe with me.” He called, totally contradicting his previous words. What she didn’t know, and what he wondered whether she’d realise, his previous words had been a lie. The squid was the least likely of creatures to attack; it was in fact tame. He just couldn’t resist messing with her and the devious smirk formed on his face before he had turned away from her.
Evan led the way around the lake to the rock where he usually entered, hidden by trees from the view of the castle and most of the grounds. ”Here.” He turned to her, pulling off his shirt in a decided fashion. ”So Keegan Elaine Greengrass,” His voice was deadpan but he actually hoped she appreciated the effort he was making to appease her because he could have a sense of humour when he tried. ”Do you trust me?” And with that he removed his trousers once again, took three long strides and dived from the rock back into the lake.

There was nothing better than diving headfirst into the cool waters on a warm day. Today wasn’t an exceptionally hot day but it was perfect enough for a swim. But sometimes Evan had craved the chilling waters of the lake in order to save his skin from the intense summer heat. That being said, it wasn’t very often that they had hot summer days in the Scottish Highlands but it was known every now and then to happen and those were the days that Evan spent more time in the water than out of it. He was better in here, away from students nagging him or staring and since even on warm days like today not very many students tended to opt for a dip (Evan had a funny feeling that perhaps entering the lake was prohibited) it was a place he could always find solitude.
Evan’s head finally broke the surface of the lake with a splash and he shook his hair out from his face, spraying water everywhere. He had come up for air just in time to see Keegan strip to her underwear and follow him in. He couldn’t help his eyes automatically taking in her half naked appearance, although he considered himself above such things as objectifying women, he was male after all. But he quickly lowered his gaze. He had more respect for Keegan than to openly gawk at her. She was a respectable pureblood lady and he would treat her so. He didn’t want her to get the wrong idea of him and think he was a lecherous male only after one thing and that this had all just been a clever ruse to get her in her underwear. Truth be told, he actually hadn’t considered the fact that Keegan hadn’t come prepared to go swimming in the lake. He was a boy after all and well Evan was used to only thinking about himself. He wasn’t one to consider others.
He wondered what Keegan’s reaction would be to the water. He knew what the majority of girls were like, screaming at bugs and insects, not wanting to get their hands dirty in mud or scared of chipping a nail. He waited for her scream of reluctance, for her to exclaim how cold it was and screech as a bit of harmless waterweed brushed up against her leg. Evan couldn’t really stand that. Well, there wasn’t much he could stand but screaming girls were one of his pet peeves. Screaming because someone was cursing them fair enough. But screaming because there was a spider on their dorm room wall? No, that was not necessary. So he waited with narrowed eyes to see what she would make of the whole situation. He knew she had been reluctant to enter and now he was wondering if he was going to have to drag her out kicking and screaming. He would actually probably just leave her here to flail and sort herself out. She’d never learn otherwise.
He swam front crawl style over to her. ”See, not so bad is it?” He asked, tone a little wary, still waiting for her to kick up a fuss. He pushed his legs out, floating on top of the water because it was beginning to be a lot of hassle having to tread water. Most Slytherins would be revelling in this moment, hoping to prove the other wrong but although Evan could be a competitive guy, he didn’t take it to the extreme levels that a lot of other did. He saw that as a sign that he was secure in himself; he didn’t need ‘winning’ to happen in order to boost his self esteem. So if Keegan turned around and said that actually she absolutely hated it and glared at him for leading her into this madness then he would simply shrug and swim away from her. He’d done enough good deeds today since he considered showing Keegan the wonders of the lake a good deed. He wasn’t generally a good deeds kind of guy. When he was a youngster he might’ve simply shoved her into the lake and told her to man up about it. The fact that he had even offered to come in with her showed Evan had matured an awful lot.
”Girls usually like swimming.” He noted, musing his thoughts out loud. ”Once they get over their body hang-ups that is. But swimming is good, fun, exercise. Keeps you fit.” He almost added ‘you should do it more often’ but realise that was tactless and although he didn’t mean it that way, he didn’t want Keegan to start freaking out because she thought he’d called her fat. ”You wouldn’t be able to keep up with me though.” He simply stated, not sounding arrogant because it was fact, not opinion. He was stronger and faster. He floated quietly for a while before a thought hit him and although he generally wasn’t one who felt the need to make small talk, he was actually interested in the answer to his question. ”Are you going to claim someone?”

Evan floated in the water and took a moment to evaluate things. There were similarities between himself and Keegan. They were both Slytherins so they shared a few personality traits and they were both purebloods. But apart from that they were very, very different people. Not just personality wise; Keegan knew that. But they had lived very different lifestyles. Sure, they were both purebloods. But Evan hadn’t lived the conventional pureblood lifestyle. His father had been a criminal and he had mixed with bad people at a young age and hadn’t really attended many of those pureblood gatherings that a lot of the Slytherin students were familiar with. He had been orphaned at the age of eight and from that moment on his life had been nothing to be proud of.
Of course he never, ever shared his past with anyone. People guessed; those families that had been connected to the Rosier’s when his father had been in power would have heard rumours. But he would never voluntarily give up his secrets. He was ashamed of his father’s fall from grace and that he now had to live with muggles in an orphanage. To do so would to show weakness and the other Slytherins would obviously judge him for it. Up until this year, he knew that a lot of his housemates thought that he was lying about his pureblood heritage because he had not been seen around their gatherings but his lack of a band proved as much now. Rumours Evan could live with, rumours meant uncertainty and that no one actually knew the truth. And thankfully said rumours were very few and far between. And because Evan had proven his worth very early on; had shown that he was tough and powerful and not to be messed with, people very wisely left him alone, even the other Slytherin purebloods. Many of them respected him and so didn’t pry about his past. He had to work hard to get himself this status unlike many of his peers who had been born with a silver spoon in their mouths. Evan had lost the spoon.
It was why he was always lashing out at the world and rebelling. His tattoos, his drinking, his smoking, they were all statements of rebellion. He wasn’t usually one to follow the crowd but he had jumped on the Dark Lord’s bandwagon. Simply because he had learnt enough from his short time with his parents to hate muggleborns and he lived with muggles and found them tedious and stupid as trolls. Completely worthless.
And swimming in the lake, showing Keegan the advantages of it, was simply another way of proving to his peers that he was worth their time. In pushing everyone away he had gained their approval. It was odd but it had happened. That was Slytherin house for you. Which brought things back to the present and funnily enough Keegan’s words about having a temperature controlled swimming pool at home chimed with what he had previously been thinking. Evan did not have such a luxury but he wasn’t about to point that out to her. He was bitter and anger fired up inside of him but it was not Keegan’s fault and although perhaps on another day he may have taken it out on her, or someone else, he let out a long breath trying to release his anger, picturing it sinking under the water. It helped a little. He tried to force a smile onto his face but all he succeeded in doing was make his lips twitch upwards briefly. ”The Lake still holds many more obstacles than your swimming pool at home, I think you would struggle to keep up. I’m not underestimating you, merely stating fact.” However he had been raised, Evan had always viewed men as superior to women in every way. It wasn’t that he believed in oppressing them particularly but he felt they had a place more suited to household tasks. Feminist he was not. He imagined that Keegan wouldn’t be particularly fond of that particular side of the sixth year.
The male was quiet for a long time, wondering why on earth he had brought this topic up. He had been curious to know the older girl’s views on the whole situation at the moment but he disliked talking about himself and he disliked talking about himself regarding this subject because that meant involving Megan. And his feelings for her were playing up at the moment. He had found a weakness in his defences and he did not like it. He seemed to slip up a lot where she was concerned. He had almost revealed to someone the other day that he found her attractive. What part of his brain that had come from Evan did not want to think about. He could not let slip anything like that today; he had to tread carefully. ”Why aren’t you sure? It’s useful for the Dark Lord, helping him to put the mudbloods in their place at last.” He was keen to deflect attention back to her but he couldn’t exactly ignore her question; that would arouse suspicion.
”I claimed Megan Taylor.” He started in an offhand voice. Or at least he hoped it was. ”She’s half-blood but she hangs around with a load of muggleborns. Besides she’s proving quite interesting to break.” He snapped his mouth shut before he could say anything else. ”She’s always been terrified of me.” He added, explaining himself. ”It’s an interesting dynamic now that all of her worst fears have come true.” He knew he sounded evil but he didn’t care. If Keegan wanted to judge him then so be it. He had a dark side and if she had ignored it so far then she was foolish.

Evan tried to paint his usual, blank expression onto his face. That one that looked disinterested, bored almost, as if the world around him didn’t not contain nearly enough entertainment to keep him occupied. But on the inside his brain was whirring frantically, trying to make up answers in his head for possible questions Keegan might ask. He was supposed to be good at lying. Hell, he was good at lying. He was practically a sociopath just without the charm. He could lie smoothly and easily and not have people question him about it. But when Megan was concerned his body seemed to flip into panic mode because he had something huge to hide. Something even more terrible than his life at the muggle care home. It was known enough that Evan had made the younger Ravenclaw girls life a misery over the years and everyone thought it was because she was a half-blood and a muggle lover.
Evan had thought that too. Up until recently. If everyone found at that now he had actually fallen for the girl… He visibly shuddered at the thought and then mentally cursed himself for allowing so much emotion to not only grace his features but to arrive in his mind in the first place.
But it was so difficult to shove this feelings away. Every time that he tried he found them bubbling beneath the surface once more, threatening to explode and reveal themselves to the world. He just couldn’t help himself a lot of the time. Sometimes he felt like he had claimed her just so he could have even more of an excuse to follow her around, to know where she was at every minute of every day because that was what the ache in his heart wanted and he could do that because he had claimed her, and not have it arouse suspicion. But then when he was with her, all of those feelings increased tenfold and it was so much harder to push them away and when he found himself wanting to touch her softly and gently, he would hit her instead and when he found himself wanting to speak out his true feelings, he would shout abuse instead.
His eyes snapped up to her face as she answered his questions and a slight sneer appeared on it. ”Your siblings should be more than capable of looking after themselves.” He answered, ready to judge her family and her upbringing if he had to. Wasn’t the general consensus among purebloods that their children should be strong and independent and not reliant on another? That was definitely how Evan felt people should be. Survival of the fittest called for it to be that way. He found himself thankful that he didn’t have siblings that might want him to pander to them. He didn’t need anybody around to hold him back and stop him achieving his own goals because he was too busy worrying about them. Evan felt that claiming someone and teaching them the ways of the world was more important than making sure your siblings were okay.
Evan thought his heart might leap out of his chest when Keegan said that she knew her. For one small, wild moment he pictured Keegan with a comforting arm around the Ravenclaw girl as the latter cried over all of the tortures Evan had put her through. But then he realised that idea was preposterous, Keegan was a proper, upstanding pureblood and would do nothing of the sort and then she mentioned her sister and he did well to keep the relief from showing on his face. ”Your poor sister having to mix with the likes of her.” He replied, throwing as much contempt into his words as he could muster which to his silent horror was not nearly enough. He actually found himself jealous of Keegan’s sister because she got to share a common room with Megan and that was the one place the fifth year could get away from him.
He narrowed his eyes at her and even though she had swum away to the rock and there was a fair distance between them, Evan was sure she could clearly see the anger in his grey irises. He did not like being asked questions full stop. It was no one else’s business why he did what he did. And he especially did not like being asked questions on this topic when he was often came so dangerously close to slipping up and revealing his true feelings. He contemplated silently for a moment or two before following her over to the rock. He decided that Keegan could maybe do with some convincing. Perhaps if she liked the sound of Evan’s answer she would go back and claim someone too and that would only be a good thing.
”The power of having someone under your control.” His eyes flashed as he spoke. ”Knowing they’ll do whatever you ask them to. Well, the more stubborn ones perhaps not at first but putting them in their place is part of the fun.” The fact that Evan could describe torturing someone as ‘fun’ proved just how much of a scary individual he could be. For a moment, he wondered how it was possible he could have any positive emotions at all, what was it about Megan that brought out that side of him that had been undetectable before? ”But anyway, the fact that I know I am helping the Dark Lord with his cause is more than reason enough.” He said flatly. Which was truthful, but it also helped him cover his feelings for the girl. "You should consider it."
