whether we’re together or apart we can both remove the masks
AND ADMIT WE REGRET IT FROM THE START
All he could do was shake his head at her words. How Lily could possibly think that about herself, James did not know. But she did and he would accept that and try and show her in little ways that she was completely wrong. And then maybe, just maybe she would start to believe in herself a little bit more and start seeing herself as the incredible and intelligent young woman that James saw. James gave her a dark look. ”I don’t think they care about crazy or any other consequences as long as the pureblood line is continued. Fanatical.” He shuddered again because there were several Slytherins in their school that they could quite accurately label as crazy. It certainly did have an affect on your mind mixing your gene pool. James was quite thankful for his sanity and supposed that his family must have married only distant relatives. Still, the thought alone was enough to make him cringe.
He shook his head vehemently. ”Of course not! It’s disgusting. It’s medieval. You’re right; most of them are stuck in the past. People are scared of change...” He added thoughtfully, his mind enlightening him as he spoke. ”That’s what the problem is. It’s how most wars start.” He sighed again. Because however much they tried, things would always circle back around to the current awful circumstances. They were both apart of this war whether they liked it or not. It affected them, it surrounded and consumed them and they just couldn’t stop thinking about it. But at least they had each other to talk to. James found great comfort in that at least. He had to also reassure himself that one day this would all be over because everything righted itself in the end. It was just a phase that they had to go through. Like slavery. It had to happen and things had to be bad for some people for a while for the majority to see that it was wrong and had to be fought against. And maybe the battle would be long and hard and maybe they wouldn’t make it to the other side but as long as at some point in the future, it would be better. So that their children and grandchildren could live in a world where muggleborns were accepted, not persecuted then James could say that his fight was worthwhile. They were just two unfortunate souls stuck in the middle. ”My parents are too fussed to be honest. As long as I give them grandchildren.”
He repressed a sigh at his thoughts, trying not to feel sorry for himself was difficult these days. It was hard to put a positive spin on things but he had to try. Someone had to be the morale booster, to give the pep talk so why not him? That had always been his role, as marauder, quidditch captain and now as Head Boy so he should be able to do it on a larger scale as well. The problem of course was that it was much easier to rally his team up to bowl Hufflepuff over at Quidditch than it was to try and keep up morale during a war where people were in pain, frightened and dying. But he was going to damn well try. He couldn’t help but to smile again at her words though. ”Planning my death?” He pretended to look offended. ”My Evans I didn’t realise you had such a harsh streak.” He ruffled up his hair and then the part on his arm that she had hit. ”And of course I loved the attention.” He chuckled.
He was going to try and help Lily win her personal battles with her family. He knew that one day they would see sense. He just hoped for all of their sakes that they would sooner rather than later. ”I’m sorry, Lily.” He said for what felt like the millionth time. But there wasn’t a lot more he could do or say at the current moment in time. ”It must’ve been a tough blow for her. It’s just a stupid grudge, she will get over it eventually I know it.” He hugged her to him and that’s when things between them started to escalate quickly.
James stopped breathing. His heart pounded violently in his mouth at one hundred miles an hour. He had done a stupid, stupid thing. What was he thinking kissing her? He had dallied with the idea earlier and had quite rightly pushed it away because he had not wanted to ruin the good rapport that they had going tonight. But then his brain had clouded over a bit and her tears had come, oh the tears! And it just felt right.... and it for a moment it had been like heaven because Merlin this was Lily Evans he was kissing. These were her lips under his. And then he remembered that Lily did not really like him and he had stopped breathing and had tensed up waiting for the blow to fall. But the blow never came. What came was Lily wrapping her arms around his neck and James didn’t even had time or the brain capacity to thank every deity that he had ever not believed in for letting this happen.
Perfection was all he could think. Even though it wasn’t. It was tired and a little bit clumsy. And they weren’t in the most comfortable position despite both of them shifting to try and find it but that wasn’t easy to do whilst kissing someone and James did not want to break this kiss. But he was close to her and it was comforting and for a little while it made everything better. And even though they would have to break apart and face the rest of the world they would now have each other. And that at least, was something to be thankful for.
